Restauración de Astragalus Trifoliatus (fabaceae) Darwiniana
Teillier,S; Zuloaga,F. O.

Root and Shoot Contribution to Carbon and Nitrogen Inputs in the Topsoil Layer in No-Tillage Crop Systems under Subtropical Conditions Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Redin,Marciel; Recous,Sylvie; Aita,Celso; Chaves,Bruno; Pfeifer,Ismael Cristiano; Bastos,Leonardo Mendes; Pilecco,Getúlio Elias; Giacomini,Sandro José.
ABSTRACT Recycling of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) from plants into soils is decisive for maintaining soil organic matter and soil fertility. Therefore, we quantified plant biomass and C and N in the shoots and roots from the topsoil layer for a wide range of annual crops grown under subtropical conditions. We grew 26 species, 13 main crops, and 13 cover crops, in the field in standard sowing arrangements. Root biomass was recovered from the 0.00-0.20 m soil layer at flowering, and shoot biomass was measured at flowering for all crops and at maturity only for the main crops. Root dry matter (DM) exhibited an average of 14.9 ± 5.7 % of the total shoot biomass at flowering, and the mean shoot DM to root DM ratio was 6.9 (2.8-15.0) for the 26 crops considered....

Seasonal variation in allelopathic potential of the leaves of Copaifera langsdorffii Desf. Acta Botanica
Franco,Danilo Miralha; Saldanha,Luiz Leonardo; Neto,José de Sousa Lima; Santos,Lourdes Campaner dos; Dokkedal,Anne Ligia; Almeida,Luiz Fernando Rolim de.
ABSTRACT The deciduous plant Copaifera langsdorffii contains important medicinal compounds which may also be allelopathic and inhibitory to plant growth. The species is endemic to the Brazilian Cerrado where there is pronounced climatic seasonality. In this study we demonstrate the allelopathic capacity of extracts from the leaves of C. langsdorffii and pre-purified fractions of the extract. Analysis by HPLC-PAD-ESI-MS confirmed the presence of quercetin-3-O-α-rhamnoside and kaempferol-3-O-α-rhamnoside as major components, as well as phenolic acid derivatives of gallic acid. The extracts from samples collected during the wet season were rich in flavonoids and reduced the seed germination rate, root emergence time, and root growth of Sorghum bicolor...

Secretory spaces in species of the clade Dipterygeae (Leguminosae, Papilionoideae) Acta Botanica
Palermo,Fernanda Helena; Teixeira,Simone de Pádua; Mansano,Vidal de Freitas; Leite,Viviane Gonçalves; Rodrigues,Tatiane Maria.
ABSTRACT Dipteryx, Pterodon and Taralea are legume genera known for secreting oils, produced in secretory canals and cavities, with medicinal properties. We analyzed the distribution, morphology and histochemistry of these glands in leaves and stems of Dipteryx alata, Pterodon pubescens and Taralea oppositifolia, three Neotropical species, using standard techniques for anatomy and histochemistry. Secretory spaces, i.e. secretory cavities and canals, exhibited a wide lumen and a single layer of epithelium. Digitiform epithelial cells, forming trabeculae protruding into the lumen, were seen in all three species. Secretory cavities with a rounded or oval lumen and secretory canals with an elongated lumen in longitudinal sections were found only in T....

Seed germination after fire: a study with a plant inhabiting non-fire-prone areas Phyton
Menezes,LCCR de; Rossi,MN.
After a fire event, germination of seeds with hard coats can be enhanced. In the present study, we investigated whether germination of Mimosa bimucronata (DC.) Kuntze (Fabaceae) seeds, which present hard coats, is increased after fire, even though these trees usually occur in damp areas, where fire is a transient event. Fire events were manipulated in trays filled with soil covered with different amounts of dry grasses, characterizing three treatments: a) 0g (control group); b) 300g, and c) 450g of dry grass. Burning treatments were applied to seeds positioned either on the soil surface or buried in the soil. Germination experiments were carried out at 0-h and 24-h after fire to obtain the germination percentage and the Germination Speed Index (GSI). For...

Taxonomic relevance of seed and seedling morphology in two Amazonian species of Entada (Leguminosae) Acta Amazonica
Rodrigues,Rodrigo Schütz; Feitoza,Gildo Vieira; Flores,Andréia Silva.
We carried out a comparative morphological study to evaluate the taxonomic value of seed and seedling traits of Entada polystachya and E. simplicata (Leguminosae, Mimosoideae, Mimoseae). Seeds of both species were collected from wild populations in Roraima State, Brazil. Our results show consistent quantitative and qualitative differences between these species regarding their seeds and seedlings. Testa fracture lines, funiculus impression, lens characters, radicle shape and length, and cotyledon lobes length, seedling morphology group, number of pinnae at first node, and hypocotyl length permit a straightforward distinction of E. polystachya from E. simplicata, supporting a recent treatment of the latter taxon as a distinct species, endemic to Roraima...

The importance of weeds as melliferous flora in central Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Grimau,Lissette; Gómez,Miguel; Figueroa,Rodrigo; Pizarro,Rodrigo; Núñez,Gabriel; Montenegro,Gloria.
The use of native flora by Apis mellifera L. in Chile has been demonstrated in many studies; however, certain species that are viewed as weeds contribute extensively to the floral composition of honey. A total of 92 honey samples from the Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins region in Chile were analyzed to determine which weeds are most important in honey production and which are most preferred by melliferous bees. Their relative contributions to the pollen fraction of each honey sample were also determined using melissopalynological tests in accordance with Chilean regulation (NCh2981.Of2005; Ministerio de Agricultura. 2006) to evaluate the botanical origins of the honey samples. Species considered weeds were classified according to their importance in...

The tribes Acacieae and Ingeae (Leguminosae: Caesalpinioideae) in the Environmental Protection Area Serra Branca, Raso da Catarina, Jeremoabo, Bahia, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Brito,Aline Franco Sampaio; Souza,Élvia Rodrigues de; Conceição,Adilva de Souza.
Abstract: Leguminosae includes six subfamilies, where the traditionally recognised subfamily Mimosoideae was accepted as a distinct clade included within the recircumscribed subfamily Caesalpinioideae, called informally as Mimosoid clade. The representatives of the tribes Acacieae and Ingeae can be differentiated principally in terms of the patterns of their stamens, being free in Acacieae and monadelphous in Ingeae. The floristic survey of Acacieae and Ingeae in the Environmental Protection Area Serra Branca included analysis of specimens collected from June 2011 to September 2012. The analyses were supplemented with dried collections from the following herbaria: ALCB, HRB and HUEFS. Ten species were cataloged, distributed among four genera of Ingeae:...

To resist or to germinate? The effect of fire on legume seeds in Brazilian subtropical grasslands Acta Botanica
Fidelis,Alessandra; Daibes,Luís Felipe; Martins,Aline Redondo.
Fire plays an important role in several grassland ecosystems in the world. Fire can trigger germination in several species, by breaking the physical dormancy of their seeds. Thus, we hypothesized that exposure to high temperatures during fire would break seed dormancy and enhance germination. We tested the effect of high temperatures on the germination of six species of legumes from Brazilian subtropical grasslands. We used heat shock experiments with the following treatments: 60, 90, 120 and 150ºC for one minute. Seeds were then placed to germinate for 60 days in 12/12 hours light/dark and 20/30ºC. Germination was generally low for all study species. Most species was not affected by heat shock treatments. However, Stylosanthes montevidensis was the only...
