ABSTRACT Recycling of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) from plants into soils is decisive for maintaining soil organic matter and soil fertility. Therefore, we quantified plant biomass and C and N in the shoots and roots from the topsoil layer for a wide range of annual crops grown under subtropical conditions. We grew 26 species, 13 main crops, and 13 cover crops, in the field in standard sowing arrangements. Root biomass was recovered from the 0.00-0.20 m soil layer at flowering, and shoot biomass was measured at flowering for all crops and at maturity only for the main crops. Root dry matter (DM) exhibited an average of 14.9 ± 5.7 % of the total shoot biomass at flowering, and the mean shoot DM to root DM ratio was 6.9 (2.8-15.0) for the 26 crops considered.... |

ABSTRACT The knowledge concerning the physiology of germination in saline areas may contribute to the development of more efficient cultural practices and adequate choice of planting areas. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of saline and temperature stress on germination and vigor of Piptadenia moniliformis (a species known in Brazil as "catanduva") seeds. The treatments were distributed according to a completely randomized design in accordance with a 3 x 6 factorial arrangement (temperature x osmotic potential), with four replicates of 25 seeds each. The seeds were put to germinate at constant temperatures of 25, 30, and 35 °C on paper towel moistened in distilled water (0.0) and NaCl solutions at 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0... |

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of salinity on the germination and initial growth of ‘jurema-de-embira’ (Mimosa ophthalmocentra) seedlings at different temperatures. The experiment was installed in a completely randomized design, in a factorial scheme of eight salt concentrations (0; 4.0; 8.0; 12.0; 16.0; 20.0; 24.0 and 28.0 dS m-1) and four temperatures (25, 30, 35 and 20-30 °C) in four replicates of 25 seeds under an 8-h photoperiod in Biochemical Oxygen Demand germinators. The variables analyzed were: germination, germination speed index, shoot and root lengths, and shoot, root and total dry matter. Temperature variation influences the response of ‘jurema-de-embira’ seeds to salinity, and the salt stress is intensified... |

ABSTRACT Dipteryx, Pterodon and Taralea are legume genera known for secreting oils, produced in secretory canals and cavities, with medicinal properties. We analyzed the distribution, morphology and histochemistry of these glands in leaves and stems of Dipteryx alata, Pterodon pubescens and Taralea oppositifolia, three Neotropical species, using standard techniques for anatomy and histochemistry. Secretory spaces, i.e. secretory cavities and canals, exhibited a wide lumen and a single layer of epithelium. Digitiform epithelial cells, forming trabeculae protruding into the lumen, were seen in all three species. Secretory cavities with a rounded or oval lumen and secretory canals with an elongated lumen in longitudinal sections were found only in T.... |

After a fire event, germination of seeds with hard coats can be enhanced. In the present study, we investigated whether germination of Mimosa bimucronata (DC.) Kuntze (Fabaceae) seeds, which present hard coats, is increased after fire, even though these trees usually occur in damp areas, where fire is a transient event. Fire events were manipulated in trays filled with soil covered with different amounts of dry grasses, characterizing three treatments: a) 0g (control group); b) 300g, and c) 450g of dry grass. Burning treatments were applied to seeds positioned either on the soil surface or buried in the soil. Germination experiments were carried out at 0-h and 24-h after fire to obtain the germination percentage and the Germination Speed Index (GSI). For... |

Siratro (Macroptilium atropurpureum Urb.) is a forager with high nutritional values and excellent palatability, and its phenology is almost unknown. Aiming at improving the knowledge and understanding siratro pollinators and floral biology, the total sugar contents on its flowers nectar and the identification of these sugars were determined by, respectively, spectrophotometry and chromatography. The total sugar concentration varied from a maximum of 1.36 and 3.23 mg/flower and a minimum of 0.19 and 0.42 mg/flower. Results showed that the total sugar concentration is high at 8:30 a.m., when the flowers open, and varies slightly during the time the flowers keep open. The variations can be related to the number of insects that visit the flowers, especially... |

We carried out a comparative morphological study to evaluate the taxonomic value of seed and seedling traits of Entada polystachya and E. simplicata (Leguminosae, Mimosoideae, Mimoseae). Seeds of both species were collected from wild populations in Roraima State, Brazil. Our results show consistent quantitative and qualitative differences between these species regarding their seeds and seedlings. Testa fracture lines, funiculus impression, lens characters, radicle shape and length, and cotyledon lobes length, seedling morphology group, number of pinnae at first node, and hypocotyl length permit a straightforward distinction of E. polystachya from E. simplicata, supporting a recent treatment of the latter taxon as a distinct species, endemic to Roraima... |
